Gas Installation Requirements
- Gas cylinders are not permitted to be within 1 metre when measuring horizontally from any door, window or airbrick.
- If there is no non-combustable roof above the installation, cylinders are not permitted to be within 3 metres below a window.
- If a non-combustible roof is installed, then the distance may be reduced to 1,5 metres.
- If an electric fence is the same height or higher than the cylinders or regulator, the electric fence must be 5 metres away from the gas cylinder.
- A 3-metre area around the gas cylinder should be kept clear of combustible materials.
- Cylinders should be installed and stored a safe distance from electrical items.
- Distance from any electrical source should be 5 metres or more, if the source is the same or lower height as the cylinder.
- If the electrical source is higher than the regulator or cylinder, then the distance can be reduced to 1,5 metres.
- The minimum distance required from the isolator to the stove/hob is 200 mm.
- If a gas cylinder is installed indoors, no pipe or hose may pass through any cupboard dividers.

FAQ
A: Gas is most often used for heating and cooking, it’s a safe, reliable and convenient alternative to electricity. The gas you use is standard LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) and is made of a mixture of propane and butane gases, its simple chemical structure means that it’s clean-burning and very safe.
A: Gas bottles come in a range of sizes, from small, portable cylinders to bigger household units. Most people that camp or braai will be familiar with the blue Cadac range of 3kg, 4.5 kg, 5kg, 6kg, 7kg and 9 kg cylinders. For household use, larger 9 kg, 19 kg and 48 kg units are also available.
A: When selling your property, the certificate of Conformity has to have been issued within three months of the sale.
A: No, all installations must be carried out by a registered and certified LP Gas installer, a new certificate of compliance must be issued after any changes are made to the existing installation.
A: You may not have more than 100kgs of LP Gas on your residential property without prior approval from the Fire Department.
A: Normally produced LP Gas has no smell, a chemical called Ethyl Mercaptan (smells like rotten onions) is added to ensure any leaks will be detected by smell long before vapor concentration in the air reaches flammable limits under normal circumstances.
A: Yes, a proper installation will allow up to a 19kg cylinder inside a house / dwelling, with a limit of a 9kg cylinder per flat, in a block of adjoined flats.
A: Provided that the unit is Compliant with South African Laws and Standards, and registered with the LP Gas association / SABS as such, it may be installed by a certified installer.
